Illiteracy declined from 50 percent in the 1960s to 18 percent of the population over age 15 in 1987. With his troupe of drummers and vocalists he weaves the "Bel Air," the old music of Martinique. A standard component of the main meal of the day—whether midday or evening—is 'food.'
