MLJ Comics was one of the first publishers to branch out from superheroes and capitalize on a burgeoning teen culture craze with the introduction of Archie by Bob Montana (1920–1975). Doing so requires much more work and a close relationship with other business partners to function effectively and even then has not proven to be an assured business model with dependable results. The first example of this is most likely the roll made by Lady Murasaki Shikibu: the Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji), painted in the 11th century.

People often describe the faces of Clowes’s characters as “distorted” or “deformed,” but as a comparison of the drawing and card shows, his approach can be uncannily photo-realistic. “Look carefully at the world around you,” his comics seem to counsel their readers. “You’ll realize it’s a genuinely strange place full of strangely expressive, odd, and disturbing faces.” Like a documentary filmmaker, Clowes merely preserves this reality. I think that the intent of the author is not in any way compromised if the author decides to provide different paths to go down.
